Table 13 The Battle of North Point, MD, Monday, 1814. Six players, Regimental Fire & Fury rules using the War of 1812 variant rules, with 6mm Baccus miniatures.Maj. Gen. Robert Ross’ British Army had defeated American forces at Bladensburg, Maryland on 24 August 1814, then occupied Washington D. C. and burned the White House. His next objective was the port city of Baltimore, Maryland. The British Army and Naval commanders decided on a two prong attack, Ross’ Army would land at the tip of Patapsco Neck at North Point and marched northward on the North Point Road towards Baltimore to capture the batteries protecting the harbor while the British Navy would approach the city and subdue Fort McHenry with an artillery bombardment. American Maj. Gen. Samuel Smith, commander at Baltimore, sent his best militia brigade under the command of Brig. Gen. John Stricker southward down the North Point Road to oppose and delay the British land force heading toward Baltimore.
The opposing forces met on the Bouldin Farm where the width of the peninsula was only a half a mile wide. Stricker’s 3,200 man brigade was on the defense behind a post and rail fence that was improved with fieldworks. Ross’ 5,000 man army approached in march column and had to deploy before engaging the American defensive line. The Americans fought well, however, the British prevailed but with 371 total casualties compared to the 213 total American casualties. Ross continued on to Baltimore the next day in oppressive heat, but his weary and exhausted force was in no condition or strength to defeat the extensive entrenchments constructed to protect the city or the large American militia force that defended them. The British naval forces were also unsuccessful in their attempt to suppress Fort McHenry, but the night attack and bombardment inspired Francis Scott Key to write a song known as “The Star-Spangled Banner”.
